How to Make an Apple Cobbler in a Dutch Oven

Things You'll Need

Dutch Oven

30+ Charcoal Briquettes

6-8 Cups Sliced Appled (3 pounds)

2 Cups Sugar

1 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon

3 Cups Baking Mix (I always use Bisquick)

2 Eggs

1 Cup Milk

1/2 Cup Water

6 Tablespoons+ Shortening

Steps

Measure all ingredients ahead of time. I bring the items camping in plastic bags that are pre-measured and marked.

Light charcoal and get everything ready to go. If using fresh apples, peel and slice while the charcoal is starting.

Preheat Dutch Oven over 11 coals below.

Put 6 Tablespoon Shortening in small metal cup or pan near heat to melt.

When Dutch Oven is hot, spread apple slices evenly across bottom of Dutch Oven.

Pour in water.

Sprinkle Sugar and Cinnamon over apple slices.

Replace lid and add 19 coals on top.

In a bowl, add baking mix, eggs, melted shortening, and milk and mix thoroughly.

Remove lid from Dutch Oven, drop dough one spoonful at a time onto the fruit and sugar. Do not spread out. Sprinkle some cinnamon on top. Do this quickly to retain heat.

Replace lid keeping the 19 coals on top.

Check in 5 minutes, if a crust has started to form, it is too hot and coals need to be removed from the top.

Check in 10 minutes, if a light crust is starting to form, the heat is just right. If no crust then add more coals on top.

Check in 20 minutes, the dough should be starting to turn light brown. If it is dark brown then remove coals from the lid. If there is no browning, add more coals to the lid.

It should be done in about 30 minutes. Push a toothpick (or small clean stick) into the dough. If it is dry then the cobbler is done and can be removed from the fire.

After enjoying the cobbler, remove any scraps of food and clean properly.

Overall Tips %26amp; Warnings

You can use any fruit you want for the filling.

If using canned or frozen fruit do not add water.

If you have leftovers, keep the lid on the Dutch oven and in the morning you can heat on the fire for a little cobbler for breakfast.

oh you can make anything in a dutch oven! I absolutely love them. Just yesterday I made green chicken chili in mine.

It's a really easy recipe that you can change up as you like. I just brown some chicken in the bottom of the dutch oven with a little olive oil. Then add a chopped onion and some slice garlic. When those are nice and caramelized, add 2 small cans of fire-roasted green chilies, 2 cans of beans, 3 cans of green enchilada sauce and enough water or chicken broth to take up the rest of the space in the dutch oven. Season with salt, pepper, some garlic powder, a palmful of ground cumin and about half a palmful of chili powder. Just bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer until it thickens up a bit.

Last week I made French onion soup. Just brown a mess of onions (about 1/2 to 3/4 of the volume of the duct oven, I go with 3/4 because I looooove onions!) Add some garlic and a little garlic powder, salt, pepper, a little celery seed or celery salt and some wor. sauce. Add enough beef broth to make up the rest of the volume then bring to a boil and simmer down til it's thicken. Serve with toast with Gruyere or Swiss on top.

Place all ingredients in pot, stir to coat everything with soup, bake COVERED with tight fitting lid or foil for 1 1/2 to 2 hrs @ 350 degrees, stirring occasionally.

There are tons of recipes towards the bottom of this page.
First off, you might need to season the inside of the pan before using it. I'm not sure with the enameled ones, but my plain cast iron skillets and dutch oven had to be seasoned when I first got them (over 30 years ago!).

I like to do a beef pot roast in my dutch oven (or a pork roast with sauerkraut and carrots). For the beef roast, brown the roast over medium high heat on all sides. Season with salt, pepper, paprika, parsley and a bay leaf. Add garlic (crushed/chopped/or powder) if desired. Add sliced carrots, onions and green pepper around the roast. Add enough water to be about 1'; high in the pan. Cover. Put dutch oven in oven at 325 F to 350 F and cook until done. You can add quartered potatoes with the roast if desired or make mashed potatoes. Use the natural gravy on everything when serving.
I have written 2 cook books on Dutch oven cooking and am working on a third. email me for info. Here are also several links to Dutch oven groups with recipes for you to try.

Here's a family recipe involving a dutch oven:

    *Fettuccine Alfredo:

The recipe I'm giving you makes 6 servings. Cook: 15 Mins.

Essential Equipment: Dutch oven (about 4-quart size); medium saucepan (about 2-quart size)

    *8 ounces uncooked fettuccine

*1/2 cup (1 stick) margarine or butter

    *1/2 cup whipping (heavy) cream

    *3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

    *1/2 teaspoon salt

    *Dash of pepper

    *Chopped fresh parsley

    Directions:

_1. Fill the dutch oven half full of water. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Cover %26amp; heat over high heat until the water is boiling rapidly. Add the fettuccine. Heat to boiling again. Boil uncovered 11 to 13 min., stirring frequently, until tender. To test fettuccine for doneness, cut a strand of fettuccine on the side of the dutch oven. While fettuccine is cooking, continue with the recipe to make the Alfredo sauce.

_2.Heat the Margarine %26amp; whipping cream in the saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly, until margarine is melted. Stir in the cheese, salt %26amp; pepper until the mixture is smooth.

_3.Drain the fettuccine in a strainer or colander, %26amp; place in a large serving bowl or back in the dutch oven. Poor the sauce over the hot fettuccine, %26amp; stir until fettuccine is well coated. Sprinkle with parsley.

You have the mother of all great cookware. Just remember not to take it from freezer to heat or it can crack. But you can make all sorts of casseroles in it, soups, roasts, chickens, fried chicken, baked chickens, ribs, anything. If this is a le crueset or its cousin, this will last you a LONG time. Use wooden utensils with it so you don't chip the enamel, and clean with hot soapy water. Not a good idea to put it in the dishwasher.

What are some tasty recipes for a cast iron dutch oven and a cast iron skillet?

I just bought my first cast iron dutch oven and cast iron skillet. Can you recommend some simple to moderate difficulty recipes I can make in both. the fewer and more common ingredients are preferred. Poultry, especially chicken recipes are preferred, too...Thanks!What are some tasty recipes for a cast iron dutch oven and a cast iron skillet?
    Smothered chicken:

Wash and season the chicken pieces with seasoned salt, garlic powder, and black pepper.

Roll the chicken pieces in flour. Set the chicken on a plate for an hour in the fridge.

In your cast iron skillet, heat up some cooking oil (pot or skillet half full) until it is nice and HOT and carefully put the chicken in.

Cook the chicken for 20 minutes, turning the chicken halfway through cooking to brown on both sides.

Once the chicken is done, remove chicken from the oil and drain the chicken on paper towels.

Drain all the grease from your skillet/pot. Return all the chicken to the pot/skillet and pour a can of cream of mushroom soup over the chicken. Add in sliced onions and sliced green bell pepper. Add in a half can of water, a dash of thyme and put a lid on it. Let it simmer on low for 20-25 minutes until it forms into gravy and is very hot.

Serve with rice and dinner rolls. This is a DELICIUOS meal! Enjoy! What are some tasty recipes for a cast iron dutch oven and a cast iron skillet?
i have been using cast iron for 40 years and you can use it for anything...even to go as far as you can use it camping on an open fire all it does is age with the time......your dutch oven can be used for any recipes that are done in a crock pot but less the time......and the product doesnt sit and cook for 6 to 8 hrs...i have baked bread in mine and pot roasts are to die for...i havbe a very expensive set of stainless steel that was given as a gift and i have probably used them 5 times and two of the times was when the person that give it to me came for dinner.....so dont be afraid of using your for everything and remember each time you use it it is just aging and only getting better....so just take a reciepe and use them in lieu of stainless...they will grow on you.....

Would like some dutch oven recipes?

Husband bought me a dutch oven for my birthday! He likes beef stew, pot roast, chicken pot pie...(That I usually make in the crock pot)

I want to try something different.

My husband doesn't like a lot of foods. He is a meat and potato kind of guy. He hatres veggies but he does like corn, potatoes, carrots, celery, %26amp; onions.

I want something different but it is hard to cook with a picky husband!

any recipes and pictures of the foods would be great!!! that way I can show my husband what it looks like.Would like some dutch oven recipes?
I was starting to think that this birthday gift was a ploy for your husband to get you to go camping. I still think he is but after a lot of research (I like to learn new things even though I don't have a dutch oven), the sites below is the best I can come up with. It was almost impossible to find recipes using a dutch oven that didn't require cooking over a campfire. I hope at least this will give you some ideas. The gloriouspotmeal site is a newsletter from a lady who only writes about cooking with a dutch oven. Probably not a bad idea to sign up for her newsletter. Of course she wants you to buy her book, but I think that her newsletter is free and you may get helpful hints and real recipes (not like the wimpy one seen on her home webpage). That's all I got. Sorry it really doesn't fully respond to your question. I was wondering why no one had responded in six hours. Now I know. Happy dutch ovening.

Krystal with you being a chef, is it that you have lost some of that spark cause you have a picky husband? I have a couple of Dutch oven recipes, but I am a lazy SOB. I do not like to overpower (as we both learned) the base ingredient with spices and herbs, everything in moderation.

Before I forget, does he like wines in cooking or deadly brandy main courses? How is he with pork, specially the hocks?

Can you please let me know, and I will start sending you parts of the ten commandments, to re-spark your culinary imagination, as the lecturer used to put it lolol.

    Dutch Oven Cobbler

    Ingredients: (serves 10)

2 #2陆 cans fruit or pie mix (peaches, apples, pineapple, etc.)

1 box white or yellow cake mix

    录 pound butter

    Preparation:

Butter inside of Dutch oven (use only ovens with lipped top because you need to

put coals on top of oven). Alternatively, you can line the inside of the Dutch

    oven with aluminum foil.

Place fruit in bottom of oven. Cover with cake mix and level it.

Cut butter into about 10 pieces and scatter over cake mix. It is ready to bake. (Note: If you use peaches, you may need to dispose of about 陆 of the liquid. Crushed pineapple has about the right amount of liquid.)

Place about 8 coals under the Dutch oven and about 16-20 coals on top of oven.

Check after 30 minutes. Baking is often complete at 45 minutes.
